The shared adventure began at Hartenholm airfield, located about 40 kilometers outside Hamburg. "The closer we got to our destination, the greater our excitement became. We were incredibly nervous about the jump," recalls Elke Küsel, one of the participants. Once there, they first received a 20-minute briefing on the ground. Then it was time to board the plane! In beautiful weather, the small aircraft climbed to an altitude of 4,000 meters.
Then the moment arrived: Together with the jumping instructor, they went out. "You don't have a chance to be afraid," says Elke Küsel. "Everything happens in a matter of seconds."
She raves about what's coming next: free fall, wind in her face, butterflies in her stomach, and a huge feeling of freedom. After a minute, the parachute opens. Then you float, spin around, and even get to steer yourself for a bit.
After about four minutes of flight, the instructor gives a signal. It's time to get ready for landing. This is done somewhat roughly, on the backside. While not an elegant solution, it's the safest way for beginners to re-enter the ground. The courageous participants then received a certificate. It was an unforgettable experience for the four colleagues, one that forged a strong bond between them. What remains is a feeling of courage and euphoria. Elke Küsel is certain: "I'd love to do that again."
